Adobe Illustrator Still Number One Vector Graphics Application

Adobe Illustrator has held its place as the number one vector graphics application for the past 18 years. In the past year, Illustrator has seen some changes that only added to its popularity. Programmers for Illustrator went to work to make this software more user-friendly.

Illustrator was always feature-rich, but becoming an expert in the program was incredibly difficult. In order to keep their loyal user following, programmers spent time making the application more user friendly for the release of their Creative Suite 2nd edition.

The most notable of the changes is the new tool Control Palette. This toolbar gives the user access to the most popular functions, enhancing the navigation through the program. The toolbar is context sensitive so it changes as the user changes their most frequently used functions. This toolbar now accounts for about 80% of the functionality of Illustrator through one feature.

The other two most exciting new functions are Live Trance and Live Paint. Live Trace is a new application that allows hand drawn sketches, digital photos and bitmap files to be scanned. From those scans they can be edited and scaled as Illustrator files. There are 13 different tracing options optimized for different art types including: color and grayscale images, hand-drawn sketches, detailed illustrations, comic art, inked drawings, technical drawings, black-and-white-logos and type. Live Paint allows the user to color artwork without having to create a layer or object to carry color. You can convert an image to a Live Paint object and then color it however you please.

Other Illustrator features were created or improved based on market trends. Trends showed that 90% of Illustrator users also use Photoshop. Illustrator designers took advantage of that fact and implemented support for Photoshop components. Photoshop layer compositions can be opened to preview and select which compositions to import and which can be made visible whether the file is opened, linked, or embedded. Another trend that affected design was the increasing use of laptops and the individuals desire to take their work with them everywhere. This made it important for Illustrator to have very laptop and wireless Internet friendly applications.
